A brief history
OMEGA’s history starts in 1848 a young watch maker named Loius Brandt opens a small workshop in a small Swiss village, this company would later become OMEGA and play a key role in some very important moments in history. In 1879 Louis Brandt passes away and his two sons take over the family business. Louis-Paul and Cesar were yet to realise the potential of the business but would change the watch industry. Just one year after taking control they moved the growing company to Bienne. After moving a few time within the town they settled at an address that the company still own to this day.
In 1885 the brothers released their first series produced calibre called the Labrador. It boasted great timing and technical advances for its time and set the standard to move forward.
1892 they launched the worlds first minute repeater wristwatch. It was based on a previous pocket watch design that they managed to scale down. I could chime the hours and minutes on demand and was on of a kind.
1894 the brand OMEGA is born. I relation to their 19-linge calibre movement the brothers saw it as such a great success the only word that they deemed fitting was OMEGA a name that represents the ultimate achievement. By 1903 OMEGA had the largest manufacturer of complete watches and had set their sights on something great by opening a research and development facility.
1905 OMEGA get into sports and become official timekeepers of various different sporting events across Switzerland.
1909 they were tasked with timekeeping for the Gordon Bennett Cup, a well known and dangerous balloon race. In the same year they increase distribution to include all six continents.
1925 starts the art deco period of design. OMEGA win the grand prize at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Indsuriels Modernes in Paris.
1931 OMEGA set new precision records thank to the hard work of its master watchmakers. They set all six precision records at the Geneva Observatory as their chonometer tested time was more accurate than any other watch before it.
1932 OMEGA become the first manufacturer to time an entire Olympic games. One watchmaker and 30 chronographs complete this task. Though out the coming years and even to this day OMEGA keep time for some of the top athletic events around the world.
1940 OMEGA are commissioned as the single largest supplier of the British armed forces and its allies.
1948 the Seamaster is born. The watch was born out of the military design and requirements which are still evident in today’s watches. Well known for being water resistant and durable nature the Seamaster remains one OMEGA’s best products.
1952 the first Constellation is released.
1955 the first Ladymatic is released and it receives a fantastic response. Passing all chonometer testing its movement was the smallest, rotor equipped, automatic watch to get an official rating.
1962 sees the first Speedmaster in space, unofficially, but it was there. Astronaut Will Schirra wore his own Speedmaster into space on the Mecury Sigma 7 mission.
1965 NASA test the Speedmaster. OMEGA was one of four brands asked to submit a test watch. NASA tested them all to destruction and choose the Speedmaster over all the brands. This watch remains to be the only watch ever certified by NASA.
1969 The first journey to the moon, the Speedmaster makes the journey and becomes and iconic part of history. During the first ever moonwalk the Speedmaster accompanied the astronauts on the two and a half hour exploration of the moon surface.
