Michael Kors, a brief history

Michael Kors the brand was founded by American fashion designer Michael David Kors. Michael is honorary chairman and chief creative officer of his brand. Born Karl Anderson Junior, at the age of 5 he changed his name as result of his mothers remarriage. Growing up in New York Michael graduated JFK High school and during these years he would design clothes and his affinity grew as he was exposed to the apparel industry thanks to his mothers modelling career.

In the 1980’s Michael Kors started to get attention and he launched a line for Lothar’s in Manhattan. The next year he launched his own brand and their was no stopping the success from that point. In 1983 Michael Kors won the First American Original award from Dupont, this was the first of many awards to be won over the following years.

Early 2005 onward really saw the boom in Michael Kors watches as they hit the shops. It seemed Michael Kors watches had taken over for a brief period, being the must have gift accessory. Designs and ranges for Ladies and Gents meant they could dominate the high street. Their unique design and feature were extremely sought after and the signature rose gold colours helped to propel the watch side of the business. In later years they would also introduce polyurethane materials to construct their case and bracelets and again adding a unique twist to their watch design.

In more recently years the desire for Michael Kors may not be as it once was but they are still very much a dominating brand in the fashion watch industry. They still have their trademark rose gold colour and have now branched into the SMART watch sector.
