Gucci, A brief history.
Gucci reserve a special place within the watch industry as they were one of the first fashion brands to branch into watch sales. They offer some fantastic designs and fit Swiss movements into their watches.
Gucci as a brand was founded in the early 1920’s but it wasn’t until 1972 that they started to make watches and being one of the first into the world of fashion watches there were not many options available at this time with regard to internal movements so they decided to go for Swiss made internals which would server them well in times to come thanks to the reliability that came with the Swiss background.
In 1972 a man named Severin Wunderman, who was already working to produce watches, met with Aldo Gucci in the US and obtained the licence to produce Gucci watches. Wunderman founded Severin Montres in California, a company that bought finished watches from a Swiss producer in Bienne, Switzerland.
The Gucci watch success became apparent early on as within three years Gucci were turning over 70 million dollars per year in watch sales and by 1988 that number had risen to 115 million dollars a year. This accounted for nearly 20% of Gucci sales.
Moving the company to Switzerland Wundeman started to specialise in distributing Gucci watches in the US as they were a strong market for the brand. Moving to Switzerland would allow much more control over the watch supply Wunderman’s company enjoyed great success and 10 years later was bought by Gucci. Wunderman continues his career in the watch industry and went on to become the head of Corum.
